In September 2017, headline inflation fell to 3.2 percent from 3.4 percent in August. According to the latest data from Statistics Botswana, inflation fell for some commodity groups, including: food and non-alcoholic beverages (from 3.8 to 2.8 percent); housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (from 6.3 to 5.8 percent); furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance (from 3.4 to 3.1 percent); health (from 2.1 to 2.0 percent); recreation and culture (from 2.5 to 2.2 percent); and restaurants and hotels (from 3.9 to 3.7 percent). However, this was partly offset by rising inflation for: alcoholic beverages and tobacco (from 4.9 to 5.0 percent); clothing and footwear (from 2.9 to 3.0 percent); transport (from 1.6 to 1.7 percent); communication (from 0.3 to 1.3 percent); and miscellaneous goods and services (from 2.7 to 2.8). Inflation was unchanged for education (4.2 percent).
The trimmed mean measure of core inflation and inflation excluding administered prices fell from 2.9 to 2.7 percent and 3.3 to 3.0 percent, respectively.
