Inflation falls to 2.6 percent in August

In August, headline inflation fell to 2.6 percent from 2.7 percent in July. According to the latest data from Statistics Botswana, inflation fell for several commodity groups, including: alcoholic beverages and tobacco (from 2.1 to 2.0 percent); clothing and footwear (from 6.7 to 6.2 percent); furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance (from 2.8 to 2.6 percent); health (from 2.8 to 2.7 percent); education (from 3.8 to 3.6 percent); restaurants and hotels (from 3.9 to 3.8 percent); and miscellaneous goods and services (from 7.5 to 7.4 percent). However, this was partly offset by rising inflation for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (from 2.7 to 2.9 percent); transport (from -2.9 to -2.8 percent); and recreation and culture (from 1.7 to 1.8 percent). Inflation was unchanged for: housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (5.6 percent); and communication (zero percent).  

The trimmed mean measure of core inflation fell from 2.5 to 2.4 percent, while inflation excluding administered prices remained unchanged at 3.6 percent.
