Headline inflation fell to 2.7 percent in June, from 2.8 percent in May. According to the latest data from Statistics Botswana, inflation declined across a wide range of commodity groups, including: food (from 2.7 to 2.6 percent); clothing and footwear (from 7.1 to 6.9 percent); housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (from 6.6 percent to 5.8 percent, mainly due to a fall in the rate of increase for housing rentals); furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance (from 3.0 percent to 2.8 percent); health (from 3.2 percent to 3.0 percent); recreation and culture (from 1.8 percent to 1.7 percent); restaurants and hotels (from 4.3 percent to 4.0 percent); and miscellaneous goods and services (from 7.7 to 7.5 percent). This was partly offset by a rise in inflation for transport (from –3.1 to –2.9 percent). Inflation was unchanged for: alcoholic beverages and tobacco (2.0 percent); communication (zero percent); and education (3.8 percent).
Inflation excluding administered prices also fell, from 3.8 to 3.6 percent, while the trimmed mean measures of core inflation rose from 2.3 percent to 2.4 percent.
