Headline inflation fell to 5.0 percent in September, down from 5.6 percent in August. Inflation decreased across several commodity groups, including: alcoholic beverages and tobacco (from 10.4 to 10.2 percent); clothing and footwear (from 6.5 to 5.7 percent); health (from 4.7 to 4.6 percent); transport (from 7.1 to 4.4 percent, mainly due to the increase in fuel prices in September 2012 falling out of the inflation calculation); and restaurants and hotels (from 8.6 percent to 7.2 percent). This was partially offset by increased inflation for: housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (from 3.6 to 4.1 percent); communication (from zero percent to 0.3 percent, due to an increase in postal charges); and recreation and culture (from 3.6 to 3.8 percent). Inflation was unchanged for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.7 percent); furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance (4.4 percent); education (4.7 percent); and miscellaneous goods and services (1.2 percent).
The trimmed mean measure of core inflation fell from 5.4 to 4.7 percent, while inflation excluding administered prices also decreased, albeit only slightly, from 5.3 to 5.2 percent.
