Inflation falls to 5.6 percent in August

Headline inflation fell to 5.6 percent in August, down from 5.7 percent in July. Inflation decreased across some commodity groups, including: clothing and footwear (from 7.3 percent to 6.5 percent); furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance (from 4.6 percent to 4.4 percent); transport (from 7.5 percent to 7.1 percent); and recreation and culture (from 4.2 percent to 3.6 percent). This was partially offset by increased inflation for: housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (from 3.4 percent to 3.6 percent); health (from 4.6 percent to 4.7 percent); restaurants and hotels (from 8.0 percent to 8.6 percent); and miscellaneous goods and services (from 0.8 percent to 1.2 percent). Inflation was unchanged for: food and non-alcoholic beverages (4.7 percent); alcoholic beverages and tobacco (10.4 percent); communication (0.0 percent); and education (4.7 percent).

The trimmed mean measure of core inflation fell from 5.5 percent to 5.4 percent, while inflation excluding administered prices also decreased from 5.5 percent to 5.3 percent.
