Headline inflation fell to 7.2 percent in April, down from 7.6 percent in March. Inflation decreased across most commodity groups, including: food and non-alcoholic beverages (from 7.1 percent to 6.1 percent); alcoholic beverages and tobacco (from 13.3 percent to 12.4 percent); furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance (from 5.5 percent to 5.2 percent); health (from 7.4 percent to 4.7 percent); transport (from 11.0 percent to 10.9 percent); communication (from 0.6 percent to zero); recreation and culture (from 5.6 percent to 4.4 percent); restaurants and hotels (from 8.5 percent to 8.1 percent); and miscellaneous goods and services (from 1.2 percent to 0.6 percent). This was only partially offset by increased inflation for: clothing and footwear (from 6.0 percent to 6.7 percent); and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (from 5.0 percent to 6.8 percent), reflecting an increase in electricity tariffs during the month. Inflation for education was unchanged at 4.7 percent.
Both the trimmed mean measure of core inflation and inflation excluding administered prices also fell, from 7.3 percent to 6.8 percent and from 7.0 percent to 6.4 percent, respectively.
