Statistics Botswana (formerly the Central Statistics Office) has released provisional estimates for gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter of 2011. These indicate that the economy expanded by 12.4 percent compared to the same period in 2010, while output was also higher than in the first quarter of the year by 9.6 percent. Overall growth was driven by continued recovery in the mining sector, which grew, year-on-year, by 23.7 percent. But non-mining growth was also robust, at 7.4 percent, led by expansion in manufacturing (11.8 percent), water and electricity (12.2 percent), construction (28.3 percent) and transport and communication (12.5 percent).
