In August, headline inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), increased from 7.8 percent in July to 8.7 percent. The increase in overall inflation was attributed to rise in inflation for the following commodity groups: food and non-alcoholic beverages (from 6.8 percent to 7.1 percent); housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (from 8.5 percent to 9.0 percent); furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance (from 8.4 percent to 8.6 percent); and most significantly, transport, which increased from 10.0 percent to 14.7 percent, due to increases in public transport fares and fuel prices effected on August 1, 2011 and August 19, 2011, respectively. These increases were slightly offset by marginal declines in inflation for alcohol and tobacco (from 8.4 percent to 8.3 percent) and restaurants and hotels (from 10.1 percent to 9.6 percent). Inflation was, however, unchanged for most commodity groups: clothing and footwear; health; communication; recreation and culture; education and miscellaneous goods and services, at 9.3 percent, 4.3 percent, -5.4 percent, 7.7 percent, 10.6 percent and 4.7 percent, respectively.
Both the trimmed mean measure of core inflation and inflation excluding administered prices also increased, from 7.4 percent in July to 8.4 percent and from 7.3 percent to 7.4 percent, respectively.
