According to estimates published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), gross domestic product (GDP) contracted by 8.4 percent in the second quarter of 2010 compared to the previous three months. However, on an annual basis, growth remained positive at 6.5 percent. The contraction was mainly concentrated in the mining sector, where output is estimated to have fallen by 23.5 percent. In contrast, non-mining GDP grew by 1 percent. In the first six months of 2010, overall GDP was 7 percent higher than during the same period in 2009. Please note that the estimates are provisional and remain subject to revision.
